Our student, friend and brother in Christ Jona Torres entered into the presence of his Savior late in the evening on Wednesday, April 20, after a 20-month battle with cancer.
Dedicated Song
David Rasbach, the Academy choir director, wrote a setting of “Abide with Me” dedicated to Jona. The song was performed Tuesday in a concert by the combined Academy Choirs.

Jona, a 10th grade student and sophomore class officer, touched the lives of his fellow students and teachers as well as many friends beyond the Quadrangle with his outstanding testimony throughout his illness.
He continued to attend school throughout all of his treatments. His smiling face and endurance brought joy to all of us. He will long be remembered. Jona was a testimony to the strength God gives when we face physical trials. His desire was to see God glorified through his illness and to see his friends dedicate their lives wholly to serve our Lord.
As Jona’s days became harder, he reminded us that we need to let our souls “be still” and rely on God for our strength. Jona will be missed at the Academy, but we are not without hope—those of us who know Jesus Christ personally as our Lord and Savior will be reunited with him in Heaven some day.
Viewing: Saturday, April 23, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Academy Auditorium in the Collins Building and Monday, April 25, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
Service: Monday, April 25, at 5:30 p.m. at Morningside Baptist Church
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Jona’s memory to “Bob Jones University, Torres Memorial Fund.” (These donations will then be designated for Bob Jones Academy.)
