BJA speech and debate coaches Chuck and Gail Nicholas were honored by the National Forensic League during the week of June 13-19 in Dallas, Texas.
Both received a Sixth Distinguished Service Plaque in recognition of an accumulation of service citations for work done regionally and nationally in the field of speech and debate.
Only six other coaches since the 1927 founding of the NFL have received this level of service awards.
Later in the week at a special Coaches Award ceremony attended by over 3000 contestants and coaches from all over the country, Mrs. Nicholas received a 4th Diamond Coaching Award representing over 20 years of coaching and over 100,000 competition points earned by BJA students. Mr. Nicholas received this award in 2009.
As a result of these accomplishments, Mrs. Nicholas was also awarded the 2011 Ralph E. Cary Award for Distinguished Career Service. The award is given to one of the 107 district chairs throughout the nation.
The award is considered the top award for coaches who have served as district chairs. Mrs. Nicholas was recently elected to her 10th year as the South Carolina District Chair, making her the longest-serving district chair in South Carolina.
In the presentation of the award, NFL Executive Director Scott Wunn noted the unique husband/wife team that serves the South Carolina district as well as the hours of service and leadership given to the speech and debate community.
