Effective with the 2013–14 school year, the middle school has entered the competitive world of interscholastic sports. Students and parents are excited about this new addition to the middle school program. The MS Lions joined the Carolina Middle School Conference and plan to compete in four sports: boys soccer and basketball and girls volleyball and basketball.
It’s 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, August 29, 2013—and history is made as the Middle School Lions soccer team took the field for the school’s first-ever interscholastic game! Hosting Mitchell Road Christian Academy, the Lions roared into action scoring two goals early into the match. Though the day proved to be one of the hottest of the summer and the heat took its toll on the teams, both played well and fairly evenly for the rest of the game. In the end, with goals from John Matthews, Griffin Lewis and Austin Huffman, the Lions prevailed 3–1. The team and its supporters celebrated the first game and first win.
Friday, August 30, proved another exciting day for the Middle School Lions. The boys soccer and girls volleyball teams boarded a bus for their first away games, and both teams returned victorious! Upon arriving at Spartanburg Day School, the girls volleyball team—making its debut in interscholastic sports—opened the competition. The obviously nervous and untested Lions fell behind in the first set 16–1, rallied remarkably, but ultimately lost 25–19. However, they regrouped and won the second set 25–22; and in the third and final set, after matching point for point to 7, the Lions broke away to win 15–8. The first game, first win sparked celebration from players, coaches and parents. On the soccer field, the MS Lions dominated the SDS Griffins 8–1. Griffin Lewis scored a hat trick, while Austin Huffman (2), Everett Bryan (2), and John Matthews added additional goals.
