Thursday and Friday, October 10 and 11, Spartanburg Day School hosted the 2013 Carolina Middle School Conference tournament. BJA’s middle school Lions entered the tournament as the #2 seed in both soccer and volleyball. The soccer team opened play Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. and encountered a Mitchell Road team that was peaking for tournament play. The Lions lost 3–0. At 5 o’clock, the volleyball team took the court against the host team. The lady Lions played well and emerged with a straight-set victory—25–22, 25–22.
Returning on Friday, the soccer team took the field at 5 p.m. for the consolation game against Langston Charter School. The Lions roared out from the start and never looked back, winning impressively 7–0 and earning the 3rd-place trophy. After an hour’s delay because of an accident on I-85, the championship volleyball game began at 8 o’clock. The Lions gave the #1 seed, St. Mary’s, a very competitive match but came up short in a straight-set defeat—25–21, 25–21. The lady Lions took home the 2nd-place trophy for volleyball.
Overall, the Lions soccer team finished their season with a record of 10–3 with 10–2 in conference play and the 3rd-place CMSC trophy. The Lions volleyball team ended their year 12–3 with 12–2 in conference play and the 2nd-place CMSC trophy. The Lions had 5 players named to the CMSC All-Conference teams. In volleyball Kathryn Christmas and Katherine Ring received recognition, and in soccer Everett Bryan, Austin Huffman and Griffin Lewis were recognized.
Both teams handled well their first season of interscholastic sports. They played competitively on the field and court and conducted themselves appropriately off the field and court. Congratulations to the players and coaches for a successful first season of interscholastic sports.
