Eighth-grader Alexander Moreno won first place at the Greenville County Scholastic Chess Open, an official U.S. Chess Federation (USCF) tournament. The tournament was open to students from elementary grades through high school who have current USCF membership. Nearly 70 contestants from across Greenville County competed in their respective age/grade divisions. Alexander was one of approximately 20 participants in the middle school division. Out of five matches, Alexander earned 4 wins and one draw for a total score of 4.50. Having won at the county level, Alexander will be competing next in the MS Division at the state USCF tournament in Columbia in March 2014.
