Blair Carrier, an eighth-grade student, will travel to the University of South Carolina in January 2017 to compete as a Division Finalist in the Southern Division of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Junior Woodwind Competition.
Blair, the daughter of Randy and Julie Carrier of Greer, earned this opportunity after winning the State Junior Woodwinds Competition of the South Carolina Music Teachers Association on November 4 at Converse College in Spartanburg.
Blair is a student of Amanda Barrett of Lyman, S.C., and has been studying flute for four years. Her mother, Julie, is her accompanist for the competition—and they will be performing Sonata in F minor by Georg Philipp Telemann; Concerto in G major for Flute and Piano, Opus 29, by Carl Stamitz; and Ernest Bloch’s Suite Modale for Flute and Piano.
The three-tiered MTNA competitions begin at the state level. Winners of each State Competition advance to the Division Competition; and Division winners proceed to the National Competition Finals at the MTNA National Conference in Baltimore, Md., in March 2017.
