On March 3-4, 2017, the BJA Speech and Debate Team competed at the South Carolina Forensic Coaches Association State tournament. The event took place on National Speech and Debate Education Day at RB Stall High School in Charleston, SC. The Academy team did well and came home with the following awards:
4th Place Overall Sweepstakes Trophy

Informative Speaking – Carter Henderson, Lauren Hancock, Ellie Myers, Colleen Phan
Novice Reading – Isaac Cropsey
Impromptu Speaking – Carter Henderson
Oratory – Grace Hand
Lincoln-Douglas Debate – Evan Case (with a 3rd place finish)
Finalists:
5th place Declamation – Lauren Bell
5th place Duo Interpretation – Carter Henderson and Jackie Brooks
4th place Programmed Oral Interpretation – Kate Jones
Top Novice in Original Oratory – Grace Hand
State Champion in Poetry Interpretation – Kate Jones
