Young women in grades 6-12 from Greenville County public, private, and home schools are encouraged to submit their essays. Essays should be between 750 – 1200 words and will be accepted for online submission between February 1, 2018, and March 5, 2018. We employ a blind scoring point system for our judging, and a copy of the scoring sheet can be found here.
Along with a $500 scholarship award, the winning essay will be published in the Summer 2018 issue of the JLG’s biannual magazine, VISIONS, and the winner will be invited to accept her award at the JLG’s Annual Meeting on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at 7 p.m.
This year’s topic: “Dear Future Me”
There’s a song that goes, “I wish that I knew what I know now, when I was younger.” How many times have we heard parents echo that sentiment? And of course there is truth that wisdom comes with age and experience, but what would happen if we flipped the script?
Young people are full of ideas, thoughts and dreams that often get lost in the transition to adulthood. As you begin the next chapter of your life, what do you want to carry with you? If you could address your future self—the “you” 5, 10, or 20 years in the future—what would you say?
The winner will be announced by May 1, 2018. Any questions can be addressed by visiting the JLG website or emailing VISIONS@jlgreenville.org.
