It began under rain on a dreary Tuesday morning but ended under a star-filled Friday night sky—and in between were three beautiful, sunny days in Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg and Yorktown. Bob Jones Academy’s 2014 eighth-grade trip proved to be a truly enjoyable educational experience. The students visited the archeological site of America’s first permanent English settlement and watched glassblowers demonstrate their skill. They toured Colonial Williamsburg and learned how colonial craftsmen made furniture, shoes and wigs and practiced pharmacy, blacksmithing and numerous other trades. They experienced the Governor’s Palace and colonial Christmas celebrations and learned how colonial government, courts and prisons operated. They sat in Bruton Parish Church where men such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry sat. The trip ended with a visit to Yorktown to complete the journey from colonial America to independent America. After a ferry ride across the James River, the group of weary but satisfied students and teachers looked forward to coming home.
