Sixth-grader Katie Blackstock recently claimed first place in the VFW Patriot’s Pen essay competition. As winner at the Post level in District Four, Katie was recognized at a special dinner and awards assembly held Saturday, January 10, in Clinton, S.C. The Patriot’s Pen competition is held annually for students in grades 6–8. The competition, hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, attracts more than 100,000 entries each year and challenges students to express their patriotism by writing a 300- to 400-word essay. This year’s theme was “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans.”
Eighth-grader Evan Case also entered the VFW Patriot’s Pen essay contest. Evan was chosen as the 1st Place Winner for the local post (Post 6734), and the 2nd Place Winner for the district. He will attend an awards banquet on Saturday, January 17.
