Senior Michael Leung of Simpsonville has been named as a finalist in the 2015 National Merit® Scholarship Program.
About 1.4 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.
Nearly 15,000 students from across the country advance to the finalist level, and all National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this group.
Every finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit® $2500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state-representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 240 corporations and business organizations for finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor’s employees or residents of communities where sponsor plants or offices are located. In addition, about 200 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,100 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for finalists who will attend the sponsor institution.
U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) recently announced the nominations of 48 South Carolina students to the United States Military Service Academies for the class of 2019. Among his nominations, senior Seren Colleen Marley of Greenville was nominated for admission to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
In making his announcement, Senator Scott said, “I am extremely proud to nominate 48 South Carolina students for admission to U.S. military service academies. Since shortly after the founding of our great nation, our academies have produced some of the best and brightest military leaders in the world and provided a world-class education for their students. These young South Carolinians represent some of our state’s best, and I am grateful for their willingness to wear our nation’s uniform and serve.”
To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, applicants must be nominated by a Member of Congress or other authorized nominating source. However, final admission is determined by the respective academy.
