On March 16-17 twelve Bob Jones Academy students participated in the South Carolina District Qualifier Tournament sponsored by the National Speech and Debate Association. The students were chosen to compete based on their successes during the 2017-18 competition season.
After preliminary rounds followed by semi-final and final rounds the following students placed at the tournament:
Semi-finalists in Dramatic Interpretation – Adrienne Houpt and Amber Brand
Tim Brodsky – 6th place in both United States and International Extemporaneous Speaking
Leah Sanders – 4th place in Humorous Interpretation
Katherine McCann – 4th place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Evan Case – 3rd place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Asa Cropsey – 6th place in Informative Speaking
Colleen Phan – 2nd place in Informative Speaking
Based on their placements, the following students will represent South Carolina at the NSDA National Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, FL, in June:
Leah Sanders in Humorous Interpretation
Evan Case in Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Colleen Phan in Informative Speaking
Additionally, the following students were chosen to be on the South Carolina World Schools Debate Team which will compete in Fort Lauderdale, FL, in June for the national title:
Julia Hancock, Lauren Hancock, Katherine McCann, Adrienne Houpt
Overall BJA placed 2nd in the Debate Sweepstake and 2nd in the Overall District Sweepstake.
