The Bob Jones Academy Forensic team has seen a good start to the new year. Participating in three tournaments in North and South Carolina, the team has come home with top awards in both Lincoln Douglas Debate and Original Oratory and with overall team trophies. The BJA debaters have been particularly strong—winning 15 trophies in Lincoln Douglas debate. Following is a list of winners at the January tournaments:
On Saturday, January 21, the BJA Speech and Debate team participated with schools from North and South Carolinaat the JL Mann Patriot Invitational. After four rounds of competition, the following students received trophies for BJA:
Richard Petersen – 4th place Children’s Literature
Micah Samuels – 2nd place Oral Interpretation of Literature
Caleb Miller – 6th place Humorous Interpretation
Vania Brockway and Christi Deas – 2nd place Duo Interpretation
Leah Petterson – 8th place Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate
Marina Shew – 4th place Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate
Elliott Kelley – 3rd place Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate
Kerry Marley – 1st place Lincoln Douglas Debate
And for the second week in a row:
Margaret Stegall – 2nd place Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate
Nichole Martinson – 1st place Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate
Lydia Petterson – 1st place Original Oratory
Overall the BJA team won the 2nd PLACE SWEEPSTAKES TROPHY
On Saturday, January 14, the BJA Speech and Debate Team competed in the Hillcrest High School Invitational. Competing against schools from South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia, the BJA team took the following awards:

2nd Place Oratorical Declamation – Jonathan Savoy
2nd Place Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate with a 4-0 record – Margaret Stegall
1st Place Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate with a 4-0 record – Nichole Martinson

Overall the BJA team won the 3rd Place Sweepstakes trophy
On January 6 and 7 the Academy Forensic Team participated in the 39th annual Laird Lewis Invitational in Charlotte, N.C. Hosted by Myers Park High School, the tournament included over 900 students from 55 schools traveling in from 15 states. The following students placed at the tournament:
Quarterfinalist in Oral Interpretation – Richard Petersen
Semifinalist and 7th place in Original Oratory – Lydia Petterson
Octafinalists in NoviceLincolnDouglasDebate – JP Basham and Leah Petterson
Quarterfinalists in Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate – Nichole Martinson and Marina Shew. Marina was also the number one seed at the end of the five preliminary rounds.
