The Academy Speech and Debate Team has reached the midpoint of the tournament season. Recently the team accomplished the following at tournaments in North and South Carolina:
January 4-5, 2013
January 4–5—Fifteen members of the Academy Forensic Team competed at the 40th annual Laird Lewis Speech and Debate Tournament hosted by Myers Park HS in Charlotte, N.C. Competing against over 1000 students representing 67 schools from 17 states, the following students excelled at this national- level tournament:
Quarterfinalists in Original Oratory: Leah Petterson, Julianne Doney, Jonathan Savoy
Semifinalists in Duo Interpretation: Caleb Miller and Leah Petterson
Octofinalist in Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate: Will Christmas
Quarterfinalist in Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate: Emily Weier
6th-Place Original Oratory: Caleb Miller
4th-Place Oral Interpretation: Helena Sullivan
1st-place Oratorical Declamation – Jonathan Savoy
BJA closed out Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate with Richard Petersen and Micah Samuels being declared co-champions.
Overall, Jonathan Savoy was recognized for being in the top 10 speech students at the tournament; and the BJA team won the 4th-place sweepstakes trophy out of 67 schools!!

On Saturday, December 8, 2012, the Forensic team participated in two tournaments. Congratulations to the following students for receiving awards:
At the Northwest Guilford (N.C.) tournament the debaters rose to the top competing against 45 debaters from over 40 North Carolina schools. Emma Johnston placed 10th in Novice LD, Richard Petersen placed 5th in Novice LD, and Micah Samuels won FIRST in Novice LD.
At the Riverside tournament locally the following students won trophies:
6th-place Extemporaneous Speaking and 6th-place Impromptu Speaking – Elliot Lovegrove
6th-place Duo Interpretation – Margaret Stegall and Will Christmas
5th-place Dramatic Interpretation – Margaret Stegall
4th-place Novice LD – Jesse Andersen
3rd-place Novice LD – Emily Weier
5th-place Novice Reading – Lauren Jacquette
2nd-place Congressional Debate – Elliott Kelley
3rd-Place Original Oratory – Caleb Miller
1st-place Original Oratory – Jonathan Savoy
1st-place Novice Reading – Mary MacDonald
Overall, the team won the 3rd-place sweepstakes trophy.
