A Mock Senate, a congressional briefing, photos on the Speaker’s Balcony of the Capitol Building and an evening tour of the monuments are a few of the many activities of a busy week in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the American Association of Christian Schools. Seven Bob Jones Academy students were chosen to attend the AACS Youth Leadership Training Conference. The students spent the week of July 8–13 with Christian school students from all over the U.S. learning about our government. Each student role-played a U.S. senator and participated in legislation writing, committee activities and senate debate. The Mock Senate was under the direction of BJA teachers Chuck and Gail Nicholas. In addition, students spent a day on Capitol Hill meeting their congressmen. Academy students were privileged to spend time with Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott and with Representative Trey Gowdy. The day’s highlight was an evening tour of the Capitol led by Representative Jeff Duncan of the third district of S.C. In addition, the conference attenders heard from BJA graduate Judge David Gustafson as well as AACS President Keith Wiebe.

Academy students who attended the conference included Alyssa Burch, Abigail Ludwig, Nichole Martinson, Hannah Mercer, Annalise Musselman, Margaret Stegall and Emily Weier. Margaret Stegall was voted the best overall role player at the end of the Mock Senate.
