A hop, a skip and a 40-minute bus ride from the Academy brings an excellent opportunity to serve others. Camp Spearhead, one of the Academy’s outreach ministries, is devoted to providing the camp experience to children with disabilities and special needs. Founded in 1968, Camp Spearhead recently transitioned to a new facility full of unexplored wilderness and fresh maintenance duties; and the staff needed some assistance to sustain the camp’s upkeep. And that’s where the Academy found a chance to love its neighbors.
Two Saturdays each school year, a group of academy students, under the supervision of chemistry teacher Mr. Joshua George, treks up to the campgrounds to lend a helping hand. Whatever the task—sweeping out new trails or pruning foliage—the students are willing to help. A day full of gardening gloves, wheelbarrows and shovels, the workday exercises both the spirit and the body. However, the day is not entirely laborious; the energetic and cheerful camp staff members emphasize the extreme importance of working AND whistling. With plenty of cheers, jokes and a delicious lunch, the workday provides an atmosphere of fun and fellowship.
Manager Marty Daigle complemented the high school group for their hard work and dedication to the Spearhead outreach. He is looking forward to next semester when the group returns.
