Members of the Bob Jones Academy Speech and Debate team competed with the best in the nation when attending the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions (NIETOC) in May and the National Forensic League National Tournament (NFL) in June.
Six students (Caleb Miller, Leah Petterson, Helena Sullivan, Margaret Stegall, Nichole Martinson and Micah Samuels) earned bids and traveled to the NIETOC event held in San Antonio, TX. They competed in a variety of events such as Duo Interpretation, Duet Acting, and Prose Interpretation. Margaret Stegall received a crystal trophy for making it to the Semi Final Round of Prose and coming in 11th place overall.
Seven students, based on competition at a district tournament held in March, represented South Carolina at the NFL’s National Speech and Debate tournament held in Birmingham, AL. This tournament, the largest academic speech tournament in the world, brought together over 3400 students from all 50 states as well as from several foreign countries. Competing in Policy Debate were Micah Samuels, Elliott Kelley. Nichole Martinson and Will Christmas; in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Marina Shew; in Dramatic Interpretation, Helena Sullivan and Margaret Stegall
The following Academy students advanced through elimination rounds to receive national recognition:
Marina Shew in Lincoln-Douglas Debate – 9 rounds of competition putting her in the top 45 LD debaters in the nation out of the over 230 that qualified for nationals.
Will Christmas in Extemporaneous Debate – 7 rounds of competition putting him in the top 70 debaters in a field of over 600.
Nichole Martinson and Micah Samuels in Expository Speaking – 5 rounds of competition putting them in the top 50 in a field of over 200.
Additionally, coaches Chuck and Gail Nicholas were recognized for their service to the NFL. Chuck received his 7th plaque for Distinguished Service; Gail, her 7th and 8th plaques. Only 7 other coaches in the history of the NFL have received this recognition.
