English 9
Helps students review the parts of speech and identify types of phrases and clauses. Uses the study of literature to identify, analyze and evaluate the fundamentals of the short story, including conflict, character, theme, structure, point of view and moral tone. Builds toward the five-paragraph argumentative essay through freshman-level composition.

Offers a general review of freshman-level grammar concepts, highlighting units on parts of speech, sentence structure, diagramming, serious errors and punctuation. Emphasizes through literature selections, an understanding of several genres and basic figures of speech and sound. Focuses on both formal and creative writing.
English 11
Provides an overview of American writers and literature from the Colonial period through the modern age. Integrates basic grammar review and vocabulary study. Instructs in library resource skills and composition techniques. Composition focus includes literary analysis, creative writing, and a formal research paper.
English 12
Surveys British literature and history with a study of writers from the Old English period through the Victorian period. Correlates special units in writing that include essays, poetry, and literary analysis. Provides college-preparatory writing instruction in style, logical thinking, and persuasion. Integrates frequent grammar review with the writing process.
Creative Writing
Introduces writing strategies and styles for four genres: creative fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama. Includes instruction and hands-on projects related to children’s literature, young adult literature, humorous writing, play writing, screenwriting, and publishing.

Journalism
Explores print, broadcast and online journalism. Studies media history and the legal responsibilities involved in journalism. Includes instruction and hands-on projects in interviewing, editing, photography, broadcast journalism, investigative journalism, and writing feature stories, sports articles, editorials, and more.

Study Skills
Teaches basic study skills and reading development. Uses a hands-on approach to a variety of topics to develop a love of lifelong learning. Focuses on improving and implementing skills which include setting goals, taking notes, taking tests, studying effectively, organizing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Reading development includes learning basic reading strategies, developing reading fluency especially in textbooks, and improving reading comprehension.

- Note: A combination of a 26 or above on the English score on the ACT, a BJU-approved CLEP score for En 102 and dual credit in En 103 will also satisfy the English 12 requirement, provided that the CLEP score is received before the affected semester begins.
